Ballistic Shield Operations

The Ballistic shield is an effective tool which is often under-utilized by law enforcement teams throughout the country. In the past, use of the shield had been limited to methodical operations such as barricaded subjects due to the size and weight of the shield itself. Advances in Ballistic technology have led to the development of a new breed of shields that are smaller, lightweight and easier to maneuver in close quarters. Based on these developments, teams can further enhance their dynamic capabilities through upgraded equipment and proper training. Understanding that the necessary elements for dynamic operations being speed, surprise and violence of action now coupled with utilizing the ballistic shield as a clearing element can greatly enhance the safety of the entry team and further increase the probability of prevailing in the encounter. During this course we will discuss and demonstrate the proper tactics to be utilized when officers / investigators are conducting  ballistic shield operations.

AT THE CONCLUSION OF THIS COURSE, THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:

•    Describe the nomenclature of the modern ballistic shield based on classroom discussion.
•    Demonstrate three tactical shield positions utilized during dynamic operations based on classroom discussion and demonstration.
•    Describe and demonstrate the proper shooting platform for ballistic shield operations based on classroom discussion and demonstration.
•    Describe and demonstrate shield striking techniques utilized in a confrontational encounter based on classroom discussion and demonstration.

Combat Mindset Lecture

We speak of good tactics and bad tactics, sound tactics and sloppy tactics, without ever really inquiring into what we mean by those phrases.  Yet the inquiry is a crucial one. Like it or not, Law Enforcement officers will encounter the chaotic dynamics of street combat during their careers. Whether they manage those encounters successfully or not is largely a function of the tactics that they practice and perform.  To put it bluntly, sound tactics can make the difference between the officer living and dying.  Understand there is no one tactic or technique that will work for every situation.  We must have the flexibility and awareness to utilize the appropriate tactic for whatever we encounter. It is important for all officers to have the proper COMBAT MINDSET to effectively implement the solution to any given situation.
